Multiple Sclerosis

At On Track Physiotherapy, we provide tailored physiotherapy programs for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We want to help you maximise your quality of life despite the challenges of MS.

Maintaining Mobility and Function with MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the body attacks the protective sheath around nerves. No-one can predict which nerves will be attacked so as a result, people with MS can often experience a widespread of different symptoms such as weakness in muscles, changes in sensation, fatigue, pain, changes in memory and thinking. MS is also one of the few neurodegenerative diseases that affect younger people with the average age of diagnosis being 20-40 years of age.

At On Track Physiotherapy, we understand the need to maintain and improve your current function so that you can continue to do what you love doing. We partner with you to help you sustainably manage your physical symptoms.

How Physiotherapy can help people with
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Improving mobility, strength and balance

Due to the nerves being attacked this can result in weakness and the loss of strength, balance and co-ordination making everyday activities feel harder or less safe.

Physiotherapy can help you move with greater confidence by working closely with you to understand your goals and create a tailored program to improve strength, stability and mobility.

Through targeted exercises and movement training, physiotherapy aims to reduce falls risk, improve walking ability to help you feel more confident, more active and be better engaged in your daily life.

Managing fatigue and spasticity

Living with MS often means managing fluctuating symptoms such as fatigue, muscle stiffness and changes in how your body moves. Physiotherapy focuses on helping you move more efficiently and manage these symptoms in a practical, sustainable way.

We can provide hands on therapy, exercise therapy and lifestyle strategies to reduce muscle tightness, manage energy levels and adapt to day-to-day changes. The goal is to help you do more of what matters to you, with energy and comfort.

Supporting daily independence

Physiotherapy supports you to stay independent and active at home and in the community, even as your needs change over time. Treatment is focused on real-world goals such as walking safely, transferring, managing stairs, keeping up with everyday activities and even keeping up with recreational sport.

If required, Physiotherapists can also recommend mobility aids, home strategies and exercise programs that support long-term function.

At On Track Physiotherapy, physiotherapy helps people with MS manage symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, balance issues, stiffness, and mobility difficulties. Our focus is on maintaining movement, improving strength and coordination, and supporting long-term independence. We tailor every program to your individual needs, helping you stay active, confident, and engaged in daily life.

We use a combination of strength training, balance exercises, mobility work, stretching, and low-impact aerobic exercise. All programs are individually tailored to your symptoms, ability level, and energy capacity. We also incorporate pacing and fatigue-management strategies to ensure exercises are safe, effective, and sustainable.

Yes. Physiotherapy plays an important role in reducing fall risk for people with MS. We focus on improving balance, posture, coordination, and lower-limb strength, while also teaching safe movement strategies. This helps you move with greater confidence when walking, turning, or navigating uneven surfaces.

The frequency of physiotherapy depends on your symptoms, goals, and stage of MS. Some people benefit from regular sessions, while others attend periodically for reviews and program progression. We work with you to create a flexible plan that adapts as your needs change over time.

We understand that fatigue and mobility challenges can make clinic visits difficult. Where appropriate, we offer home visits and community-based physiotherapy sessions to ensure you can access high-quality care in a comfortable and supportive environment.
